Mobile cauda equina schwannomas

چکیده
Although very rare, cases of cauda equina tumours migrating several levels have been known to occur. We report two cases of cauda equina schwannomas which migrated from its primary site, one caudally and the other one rostrally as confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging perioperatively. The f irst patient was a 27-year-old man and the second a 41year-old man; both presented with back pain. This report aims to remind clinicians that certain tumours attached to the roots in the lumbar spinal canal may migrate.

Multiple schwannomas of cauda equina in the absence of von Recklinghausen's disease.
Multiple schwannomas in the absence of neurofibromatosis is rarely reported in the literature. We present a 56-year-old female with a history of severe leg and back pain on the left side for one year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed 4 schwannomas located in the cauda equina in the absence of von Recklinghausen's disease.
متن کاملSpinal schwannomatosis of the cauda equina in the absence of neurofibromatosis: case report and treatment strategies
Schwannomatosis is a rare tumor syndrome characterized by the presence of multiple benign non-vestibular, non-intradermal schwannomas and by the absence of neurofibromatosis type 1 or 2 syndromes. Multiple schwannomas are clinically and genetically distinct from neurofibromatosis, and the main treatment in case of symptomatic lesions is represented by surgical resection. In case of asymptomatic...
متن کاملAncient Schwannoma of the Cauda Equina: Our Experience and Review of the Literature
Ancient schwannomas (AS) are exceedingly rare variant of common schwannomas (CS). Only two cases involving the cauda equina region have been previously reported in literature. AS are typically associated with a higher histological degree of degenerative changes (Antoni B areas). It is of peculiar importance, according to our opinion, to outline that, because of their extremely slow growth (whic...

© 2016 Surgical Neurology International | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Abstract Background: Cauda equina paragangliomas (CEPs) are rare spinal tumors that are mostly misdiagnosed preoperatively as ependymomas or schwannomas on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Clinically, they usually present with the gradual onset of back pain and radiculopathy rather than an acute cauda equina syndrome...
متن کاملGiant invasive schwannoma of cauda equina with minimal neurologic deficit: a case report and literature review.
A 53-year-old man presented with a history of slight weakness in the right lower limb. Giant invasive cauda equina schwannoma was diagnosed according to the criteria of Sridhar et al. Schwannomas are usually benign and common tumors arising from nerve sheath cells, particularly from sensory nerves. Giant invasive schwannomas, however, are rare, and most of patients with them present with severe...
